Abstract:While English as a lingua franca (ELF) has emerged as the first truly “globalinguistic” phenomenon(Martin, 2014), Northern European people’s English proficiency lies in the top place among those of non-English countries. This study first examines foreign language teaching in Northern Europe from an educational aspect, in particular its organizational features, participation levels, the initial and continuing education of foreign language teachers and teaching processes, by referring to the Key Data on Teaching Languages at school in Europe 2012, then tries to dig out more of the underlying reasons for the broad spreading and proficient use of ELF there from historical, social-cultural and economical perspectives. An in-depth exploration is followed, reporting attempts to incorporate an ELF perspective in the language classroom, reexaminations on current methodologies, considering how we might develop materials and tasks that could better incorporate aspects of English as used in lingua franca interactions. Concerning the situation of English teaching in China, this study proposed a a social-cultural approach, and finds critical pedagogy may adding to what English teachers might do in China in order to respond to ELF in practice.

高职院校在校生英语学习动机调查

摘要:作为学习中的重要推动力,动机一直是外语教学界的主要研究对象和研究领域。我国外语教学界对动机的类型、强度、特点及持续型等方面已展开过大量的实证调研,为外语教学提供了理论和实践方面的支撑。然而过往调查的不足之处主要体现在两点:第一,以大学生为对象的调查研究基本为本科院校在校生,缺乏对职业院校学生的针对性调研,这与我国当前重视职业教育的趋势不相符合。第二,现有研究的默认前提为学生以彻底掌握英语为学习目标,而高职院校在校生普遍英语较差,英语学习目标不甚明确。因此,本文试图通过问卷调查方式,找出高职院校在校生英语学习动机的独有特征,为此类院校英语课程的设计和实施提供一定参考。
