讲座提要:
William Carlos Williams was a physician who mostly wrote his poems between patients, on his little office typewriter. Our task will be to see how these little poems differ from just ordinary writing or talk. The firs item on the list is a note posted to the icebox (refrigerator) by Williams’s wife Flossie. He sometimes came in very late and she had gone to bed so she left a note. We will begin with his answer and then consider related poems. The aim will be to show that every word counts and that poetry is also VISUAL: how it looks on the page or the screen matters. These poems are written in free verse but Williams does a great deal with sound repetition and echo. We will see that, as Williams’s great poet-friend Ezra Pound put it, “Poetry is news that STAYS news.”
