讲座题目
On Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
讲座摘要
This lecture on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night focuses on the idea of “Comedy” as opposed to “Tragedy” and other forms in which the great English writer Shakespeare’s work is characterized. The lecture contains information on the author’s life at the time he wrote the play and its initial performance. There will be a discussion of its opening and its significance with video illustrations using a BBC performance that is over 35 years old but is one of the few available and places less emphasis on gender and dressing/costume concerns as more recent productions. The lecture will move into a discussion of various characters in the drama including the Duke, Malvolio, the unhappy one, the “female” characters, and the themes of the play with glimpses of how these reflect Shakespeare’s other plays and their relevance to us in 2024. The lecture concludes with recommendations on recent work on Twelfth Night, discussion points and a quiz!
