Zhu Jiongqianga retired professor with SIS, wins the  Excellent Achievement Prize of the Australian Government for his “A Glimpse of English Literature”

“A Glimpse of English Literature” published by Zhejiang Education Publishing House is a selection of papers on the literary theories of English-speaking countries such as Britain, America and Australia, for which he has recently won the “Prize for Excellent Achievement of 2006” by the Australian government and the Australia-China Executive Council. Australian scholars consider that the book introduces to Chinese readers vividly the literatures of English-speaking countries, especially the current Australian literature. It is said that Professor Zhu is the first scholar who has received this honor in Zhejiang Province.

Professor Zhu has been long engaged in the teaching, research and translation of English and American literatures. He began to take up the research on Australian literature in the early 1980s and has published more than ten academic papers on Australian literature in newspapers and journals home and abroad, including “Austrilian Books Review”. He has translated The Eye of the Storm”, the masterpiece of Patrick Victor Martindale White, the Australian winner of Nobel Prize for Literature. In the early 1990s, as Chief Editor and translater of “Selections of Contemporary Australian Short Stories and Novellas”, and he won the second prize of “The 2nd National Excellent Foreign Literature Books” and the 3rd prize of “Excellent Social Science Achievement” organized by Zhejiang provincial government. For “Selections of World Short Novels• Australia and New Zealand”, he won  the first prize of Han Suyin Chinese and Foreign Cultural Exchange Foundation. Professor Zhu has been invited to give lectures and attended international academic conferences in the University of New South Wales, the University of Western Australia and Murdoch University. He has wide connections with the Australian academia and literary circles, and has an enormous academic reputation there. Early in 1992, Pasco, a famous writer and the editor of the magazine --“Australian Short Stories”, wrote an article particularly to speak highly of  Professor Zhu as “a peaceful and friendly cultural messenger across the vastnesses Pacific Ocean” and “a scholar devoted to the construction of a bridge between the literatures of the two countries”.
