The 18th International Cultural Festival of Zhejiang University Had a Grand Opening

“Gather intellectuals from the whole nation, while spreading cultures through the forms of singing, dancing, cooking and
clothing; capture essences from all over the world, while celebrating the blossom with the spirits of excellence, diligence,
resolution and perseverance.” On the night of October 24, also the World United Nations Day, the 18th International Cultural
Festival of Zhejiang University had its curtains up on Zijinggang Campus. Professor Pang Xuequan, Vice President of the
university, addressed the opening ceremony. Also present at the ceremony were Leaders from relevant departments and SIS.
As one of the four most traditional students’ academic festivals, said Vice President Pang, the International Cultural Festival
had been held for 17 years continuously. Developing from the Foreign Language Festival into the International Cultural Festival,
the activity has revealed its effects and prolonged efforts in promoting the internationalization of the university’s educational
measures, training students to attain an international vision, and producing a multi-cultural atmosphere on campus. He also
appreciated SIS’s long-term contribution to promoting the festival, and thanked the related departments for their supports to
international culture exchanges and the construction of university culture.
Based on the experience and achievements gained from the previous 17 years, the 18th International Cultural Festival is aimed
to be full of creativity, of breakthrough, of influence, and of efficiency. It contains various activities, for instance, the 2nd English Speaking Contest of Zhejiang University, the Recipe Translating Contest,“Casio” Cup Provincial Japanese Speaking Contest
and Singing Contest of Foreign Language Songs Among Universities in
the 2008 Olympic Games will be held. Besides, the “2007 Hangzhou University Students’ Model United Nations” will begin with the help from the Communist League Committee of Zhejiang University. The International Cultural Festival has not only shown

At the end of the opening ceremony, Professor Fan Jieping, Acting Dean of SIS, gave a lecture named “International Vision and Elites”. He mentioned standards of elites—excellent expertise, creativity, leadership, and an international vision. He hoped all
the
cultures, pursue one’s studies with his entire mind”, could always remember to know well of Chinese culture while broadening
their horizon. Thus, they could truly become the leading talents with knowledge and foresight.
