The 9th International Symposium of Comparative Study of Vocabulary was held in Zhejiang University from October 13th to 16th, 2005. The symposium was specifically proposed and organized by the Institute of Japanese Language & Culture of School of International Studies, Zhejiang University. This symposium was hosted by the School of international studies(SIS), Zhejiang University, with the assistance from Academy of Japanese Vocabulary Study, and with Prof. Ma Andong, director of Institute of Japanese Language & Culture and Associate Professor Wang Chun in charge. About 40 representatives attended the meeting, among whom 30 from the mainland and 11 others from 6 countries and regions, including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and Hongkong.
Prof. Su Jiugao, Chairman of Institute of Japanese Language Teaching in China and Dean of school of Foreign Languages, Jilin University, attended the meeting and gave an instructional speech. The most renowned scholars in the field Japanese studies in China, such as Chen Yan (associate Chairman of Institute of Japanese Language Teaching in China and professor of Dalian University of Foreign Languages), Prof. Wu Kan (executive director of Institute of Japanese Language Teaching in China and director of Japanese Department, Tongji University), Prof. Peng Guanglu (director of Japanese Language & Culture Department of School of international studies, Peking University) and Professor Jie Xia from Nanjing College of International Relations, each hosted group discussions respectively and delivered an instructional speech. Obviously, this meeting won full support from Chinese academic circles of Japanese language studies. Meanwhile, it was another high-level international academic symposium held in the School of International Studies, Zhejiang University. During the symposium, domestic and foreign scholars released 13 academic papers and a two-day lecture was given on the special topic of vocabulary study.

In conclusion, the international symposium which was of profound academic influence turned out to be a great success. It boosts the extensive communication and cooperation between international academic circles on the domain of vocabulary study, promotes further discussions on comparative study of vocabulary between vocabulary researchers in ZJU and other universities, and strengthens the free communication of scholars both at home and abroad.
