At 9 am, 14th September, the Mexican American writer Sandra Cisneros gave us an entirely new sort of lecture at the invitation of Prof. Guo Guoliang, from the Institute of English Literature. The speech focused on the novel <The House on Mango Street>, which made a name for her and another great work <Caramel>. Cao Jie, associate general editor, Qian Jianfang, executive editor of Zhejiang Literature Press, some graduates and undergraduates of SIS attended this lecture.
Sandra started with the difference between a writer and an author, telling us that her experiences in her student life and stories she liked contributed a lot to her novel writing later. After that, Sandra answered questions asked by the students. She talked actively on such issues as her writing style, the basic circumstances of the contemporary American writers, the livelihood of Mexican women and racial discrimination. She told everyone present that there should be a unique “mango street” in everyone’s heart, “mango street” was by no means a story happens only in America, it was a story that belongs to all humans. Sandra’s humorous, erudite and sincere attitude left a deep impression on everyone. This lecture gave the audience a better chance to understand Sandra and her works. After the lecture, Sandra and the students took photos together.
Introduction:
Born in 1954, Sandra Cisneros, a famous contemporary female writer and poet, became known by her novel <The house on Mango Street> at 30. This book won the American Book Award and was included in the <Norton Anthology of American Literature> soon afterwards. Later, this book made its way into the class of school around the globe, being widely taught as a must-see book for reading and writing, and was the most famous classics for growing up. Her other works included the short story collection <Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories> and some other collection of poems.
