At 1 pm on October 22nd, at the invitation of Institute of German Studies, a popular German author, Markus Orths, in the company of Miss Liu who works for the Department of Culture Education, Consulate General of Germany, Shanghai, brought his new work <voice> and gave a fantastic recital to our teachers and students. Associate Professor Li Yuan, deputy director of Institute of German Studies, hosted this meeting and gave a welcome speech. Both undergraduate and graduate students major in German, overseas students of “Chinese Studies” in German class and many other major students interested in German literature attended the meeting.
The recital began with a brief introduction made by teacher Li, which concerned the studying and writing experience of Mr. Orths. And then, Mr. Orths recited his unpublished short novel <voice>, which is aimed at approaching the happiness pursued by human being. The author assumes that in modern society many people always want to get more, like a good job or high status, but neglect their inner voice. Mr. orths hoped that his work could convey a life attitude that being faithful to the soul and living truly to the public.
Students heatedly discussed with Mr. Orths and exchanged their respective views on this practical topic, such as the diversity and similarity in culture and ideology between the East and West. Finally, the splendid recital ended in impassioned applause from the students.
After the trip of Hangzhou, Mr. Orths will give another recital entitled Seeking and Finding in Life together with Chen Cun, a Chinese writer, at the invitation of Writer Union of Shanghai.
