On August 9th, 2010, the 8th National Seminar on College English Teaching was held successfully in the Zhi’Jiang Hotel of Hangzhou by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. With the sincere hope and desire to study, discuss, exchange and harvest, thousands of teachers gathered in the city of Hangzhou.
Two teachers from ZJU shared their teaching experiences of <New College English>. Teacher Fang Fumin held that nowadays students always got confused and impatient about the cognition of their language ability, which made the classroom teaching much more important. Teachers should find students’ interests, and let them participate in the curriculum activities in order to exchange thoughts and ideas to the fullest extent within limited class time. Teacher Xiong Haihong presented her student-centered teaching conception and the method of “improving writing through intensive reading”. She insisted that the design of curriculum activities and exercises should be on the basis of students’ participation, in order to stimulate the students’ creative thoughts and foster the students’ self-learning. As for the contradiction between the requirement of writing exercises for students and the limit of time for teachers to check, she shared her own experience on using “Bingo AI Writing Evaluation System” to enhance her working efficiency.
Prof. He Lianzhen, deputy director of the steering committee of Foreign Language Teaching in Colleges and Universities, Ministry of Education, discussed the confusions and problems in practical teaching with teachers present as well. During the face-to-face communication, she also took the actual conditions in Zhejiang University for example with the innovation situation of College English teaching, hoping that teachers will seek solutions together.
